Controlling Weeds with Safe, Organic Lawn Treatments

A vibrant, green lawn is the finishing touch to a beautiful home. However, sometimes pesky weeds may pop up! At Finishing Touch Landscaping we’ve collected a handful of our best tips on how to control weeds and nourish your lawn – without using harsh chemicals that are unsafe for your family, pets and friends. There are 3 basic steps involved in tackling weeds safely:

Step 1 – Identify the Type of Weed

This is a very simple step, but identifying the type of weeds on your lawn will help you find the most effective treatment method.  There’s no single herbicide or weeding technique that will work for everything. Weeds fall into the following 3 categories: unwanted grasses, grass-like plants and broad leaf plants. For help identifying the type of weed on your lawn, click here.

Step 2 – Select your Treatment Method

For lawns with only a few weeds, pulling them by hand is an effective treatment method. If your yard is overrun with weeds, organic herbicides are a safe and effective solution. There are 2 different kinds of herbicides: pre-emergence herbicides kills the seeds before the weeds have a chance to break through the soil, while post-emergence herbicides target weeds that have already grown. Depending on the type of weed you have, select the appropriate herbicide. Sometimes, even simple household ingredients such as vinegar can be an effective post-emergent herbicide!

Step 3 – Application

Once you have chosen your treatment method, it’s time to get to work! If your weed killer involves the use of a herbicide, be careful to read the directions and follow them closely for best results. Most herbicides are applied as water-based sprays for easy application. If you have any questions or need the help of an expert, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
